Buildings as efficient and interoperable components of the future energy system

Start: 10/2023

End: 09/2026

Buildings should be able to interact with the energy system (power grid and market). For example, charging processes, batteries, and heat pumps should be controlled in a way that makes sense for the energy system. One specific problem that needs to be solved is the scalability of energy management solutions and their integration into the energy system.

To date, many individual solutions have been developed for specific buildings and neighborhoods. Based on previous EU projects, the project will develop a reference architecture and demonstrate it in six pilot projects. One of these pilot projects is the Smart East district in Karlsruhe, where electric car-sharing vehicles, batteries, and photovoltaic systems are optimally coordinated. The neighborhood makes several contributions to a stable, efficient, and renewable energy system.

The FZI is developing algorithms for optimal schedules for rechargeable electric vehicles and batteries in the Smart East district in Karlsruhe’s Oststadt neighborhood. The FZI is also working on the development of the European reference architecture for intelligent buildings.

Research Focus

Sustainable Engineering and Energy

This research focus includes the research and design of sustainable IT innovations in the cross-sectional areas of energy, mobility, production, water management, and logistics. This involves developing systems that promote the ecologically, socially, and economically sustainable use of resources, and providing strategic consultancy services to companies, particularly SMEs, on their path to greater sustainability.

Safety, Security and Law

In this research focus, the FZI investigates and conveys innovative concepts, methods for protecting IT systems, and legal framework conditions to enable secure digitalization.
